How to Choose a Reliable Contractor in Garland County
Last reviewed 2026-10-28
Hiring a contractor is mostly about reducing risk: the risk the work is done badly, the risk it isn't finished, and the risk you end up paying for someone else's mistake. A few checks up front take care of most of it.
Check the license
Arkansas licenses many trades at the state level. General residential and home-improvement contractors are licensed by the Arkansas Contractors Licensing Board, and trades such as HVAC, plumbing, and electrical have their own licensing programs. Ask for the license number and look it up yourself rather than relying on a photo of a card.
Ask for proof of insurance
Ask for a certificate of liability insurance sent directly from the contractor's insurance agent, and ask whether they carry workers' compensation for their employees. If an uninsured worker is hurt on your property, it can become your problem.
Get more than one written quote
Two or three written quotes for the same scope let you see what a fair price looks like and catch anything one contractor left out. Make sure each quote names the materials, the scope, who pulls permits, the timeline, and the payment schedule.
Be careful with deposits
A reasonable deposit to order materials is normal. Paying most of the job up front is not. Tie payments to completed milestones, and don't make the final payment until the work is done and inspected.
Get it in writing
The contract should cover the scope, materials, price, schedule, payment terms, warranty, and how changes are handled. Verbal promises are hard to enforce.
Red flags
Door-to-door crews after a storm who need an answer today, cash-only pricing, no local address, and reluctance to put things in writing are all reasons to slow down.
